Wood mulches are firing off spores from artillery fungus
Q. I am getting shallow dim spots on the windows and the wan siding on my house. The spots are about the largeness of the command of a pin and appear to be black or dark brown in color. I have tried to rub out them with mineral spirits without success.
The only mode I have found to take away them thus far is by scraping the windows with a razor blade. I do not understand how to remove them from the siding. A lover of mine thinks they might be some type of spore from the trees.
Is this possible? I have several very colossal oak trees near my home. Also, if you have any philosophy how I might relocate these spots and keep them from happening in the future, gladden advise. A. The dark spots are joking aside spores, but they do not come from your oak trees.
They are the reproductive structures produced by artillery fungus (Sphaerobolus stellatus), one of several fungi plebeian on wood mulches worn around plantings in dwelling and commercial landscapes. All of these fungi are active in the true decomposition of wood-based mulches. Artillery fungi are the only ones that cause such a problem.
The unusually feeble fountain-head this year created very favorable conditions for fungus to flourish. Unfortunately, there is no understandable infusion to preventing it from colonizing mulch beds or removing the indefatigable dark spots the spores withdraw behind. The fruiting bodies of artillery fungi glance like small cream-colored or orange-brown cups that are about 1/10 of an inch in diameter.
There is a separate unspeakable "egg" in the cup, which is a humid mass of spores. These fruiting bodies appear on the covering of the mulch but are barely notable unless you are looking for them closely. Areas of mulch may appear matted and lighter in color than mulch that has not been colonized. Bird's hideaway fungus is also commonly found in mulch, but is much larger and more noticeable. It does not throw a delicate spore mass.
Artillery fungus orients itself toward intense objects, such as light-colored siding, windows or glowing automobiles parked nearby. The fungi spout the muggy spore mass, which can be blown by the take the wind out of as high as the second scenario of a house. As you have discovered, the spore oceans is difficult to remove without damaging surfaces. It is acceptable to stain, even if you remove it successfully.
Although exploration is being done on this problem, there are no known controls for artillery fungus. There is nothing you can vaporizer on mulch beds to delay its growth, nor can researchers state unequivocally that unquestionable species of wood are absolutely resistant.
